Katie Piper (1983 - )
English writer, activist, television presenter and model;
in 2008 she survived two horrendous physical attacks by
her ex-boyfriend, including acid thrown in her face,
causing major damage to her face and blindness in one eye;
she underwent pioneering surgery to restore her face and vision.
After her recovery, Piper became a tireless activist to help victims of burns
and other disfigurement injuries, wrote a best-selling autobiography,
and has appeared in several documentaries and TV series
about her ordeal and her activism, as well as other TV endeavours.
Thank you so much for featuring Katie. She's quite the star in the UK as at the time of her horrific ordeals no one had really heard of acid attacks. I know this blog is about beautiful women but I think it's worth mentioning as she does, the amazing men that have helped her on her road to recovery. Rebuilding her face, trying to save her vision and the on going medical issues she has as the acid burnt all down her throat and torso too.
ReplyDelete@ LL Cool Joe -- Thanks for nominating her! I remember the news story of the attack and a bit of the follow-up stories about her surgeries, but I didn't know what ultimately became of her. So wonderful that she has survived, thrived, triumphed, and found the success and happiness she deserves!
DeleteOMG I've heard about her.
ReplyDeleteVery corageous.
XOXO
😳 As usual, you have given me the basics of a woman's life that is worthy of a deeper dive. Piper, now Sutton in a happy marriage thank goodness, is a courageous activist. I wonder if her story has created enough change in the British judicial system after her story became so well known.
ReplyDeleteI'm a true crime watcher (a "fan" I guess, but I'd rather believe I have forensic curiosity) and I am always angry at the end of horrific crime stories in UK and Canada when sentencing is life in prison (yay!) with the possibility of parole after 6 or 7 or 8 years (WTF?!). Why even use the word life?!
The first attack on Piper was by a criminal named Lynch after only two weeks of knowing each other. The second attack, two days later, was by an accomplice after Lynch lured Piper into a "kill zone." Both Lynch and the acid-thrower, Stefan Sylvestre, received life sentences (yay!) but Sylvestre was out after 9 years, didn't follow his parole restrictions, and went back to prison (while there got married to a mother of one child...what is with her?!), and when released again he skipped out and is the subject of an international manhunt! Maybe they should have kept him where they had him for life!
And Lynch is up for parole, too! 🤬
So now, Sutton has the added pain that her two attackers, who both received life sentences, could still be a danger to her! Again, why use the word life when they don't even mean 20 years for either of them?! 🤬
@ Cleora Borealis -- Yes, many people would like to see parole reform in both countries.
DeleteA few years ago she was asked in an interview "Do you forgive the people that did this to you?" She said "No, why should I, they never asked for forgiveness anyway". I can't say I blame her either, and she is a Christian too.
DeleteThis lady is beautiful in ways as well as physical. Acid is a weapon in Indian domestic violence, too.
