Elaine Pagels (1943 - )
American professor, scholar and historian of religion;
expert in early Christianity and Gnosticism;
her best-selling book The Gnostic Gospels (1979)
examines the divisions in the early Christian church,
and the way in which women have been viewed
throughout Jewish and Christian history.
She's wonderful, definitely rattles the cages of the white male centric Catholic theologians. I was very interested in her account of the suppressed gospels, which didn't fit Constantine's vision for a militant male led church going forward with conquest in mind.
ReplyDeleteI actually read that back in the day. Food for thought, for this pagan.
ReplyDeleteI read her book, The Gnostic Gospels, several times. Then I read much of the Nag Hammadi library it was based on. Both had a profound influence on my spiritual journey away from Christianity.
