Karen Carpenter (1950 - 1983)
American singer and drummer;
achieved stardom in the pop duo The Carpenters;
celebrated for her distinctive three-octave contralto range;
her untimely death brought media attention to anorexia nervosa and
other eating disorders not yet widely understood.
Stunning voice. Such a tragic story. I know a few people who have died as a result of anorexia, such a bitch of a disease.
ReplyDeleteIt was a long time before it was understood as a mental illness. I remember my school principal warning girls they could slim themselves to death, assuming they were doing it deliberately, no idea of the grip of the illness on the girl.
ReplyDeleteBeware the earworms!
ReplyDeleteKaren Carpenter. Sigh. Such a tragedy.
I always admired the fact that she was a drummer.
@ e -- Yeah, me too. A female drummer was very gender rebellious for the time. Still not common.
DeleteThat voice!
ReplyDeleteI have three Carpenters albums!
XOXO
@ Sixpence Notthewiser -- I agree! I've always thought she had one of the most gorgeous voices of any female singer I've heard before or since.
